Spinning Stories and Weaving Tales: Tasar Silk in Bhagalpur, Bihar
One part of the diploma project was to work with artisans who do embroidery and make cushions for an international textile fair. The main component, however, was to do with the silk community in Bihar.
Most of the data was collected by observing the craftsperson, dyer and supplier, to understand how things can be manipulated to achieve the desired result. Documentation was carried out in form of pictures log entries and illustrations. Once the main information was acquired and analysed, one saw it could be worked on in collaboration with market trends and requirements.
The design methodology involved field work, conversing with weavers, identifying and recognising the needs, defining the problems, understanding the infrastructure, identifying the chain of people, reviewing past work & process and implementation of strategies. One hopes the documentation will contribute to revive the use of the beautiful silk fibre and its products.
