Woven Reflections: A Range of Hand-woven Jacquard Sarees
The objective of this project was to design a range of hand woven sarees for the brand ‘Akaaro.’ As per the brief set by the company, the collection was to be based on ‘Matsya,’ the first incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
The first stage of the project involved research on Vishnu and his avatars. Based on the data obtained, a moodboard was derived to serve as a basis for conceptualisation of designs. Next, the sarees were woven on the studio loom. Each sample was draped and minutely analysed in terms of colour, composition as well as material.
Changes were made accordingly and the garment was sent for production. Three major craft clusters were identified – Fulia in West Bengal, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh. The final collection consisted of hand-woven jacquard sarees as well as Ikat sarees and Kantha sarees.
