UTILITY STORAGE SYSTEMS

The project aimed at developing practical and cost effective surfaces and products, using unconventional materials for kitchen textiles and utility; also making a range of foldable utility products.

Research covered magazines, internet, fashion forecasts; and dealing with manufacturers, pricing, weaving and stitching. The project was a crossover from textiles to product with textile inputs, working on utility storage products. Origami was the right direction as it works with lots of layering, folding, collapsing, twisting etc. So one started exploring with box shaped products and paper, and then applying all the folding mechanisms as to see which works better. The folding mechanism needs to be simple.

Fabric quality was decided on the basis of the structure, to hold the shape after folding. Accessories giving definite shape to the product are foam boards, bamboo strips and velcro. A lot of modifications were done to get the proper dimensions and structure.
