diploma project
A STORY OF THE DRAPE:
The project was about developing a collection of saris rooted in the handloom clusters of Kumbakonam, Kanchipuram, Salem etc. In these sectors, the process of weaving, play of colours and the design language is very different and hence, makes it unique.
The target were women from 25 – 50, traditional in values, but modern in outlook. Latest collections of saris by upcoming designers were studied to understand latest trends and comprehend contemporary aesthetics. New, unconventional design elements were looked at.
Client’s stores were visited to understand the market scenario. To comprehend the handloom sector, field visits were made to Thanjavur and Tiruvannamalai. There was direct working and communication with the weavers. The collection included a lot of research and understanding the design sensibilities of a traditional product. Brainstorming of resources and requirements led to the final design collection. A collection of 11 saris were developed during this project.
