Silk Memory’- The Open Access Database
Project I was 'INDI'GENOUS: The objective was to contribute to a digital archive, Silk Memory; creating an overview of Indian textile crafts, identifying and integrating twenty-five. It required introducing students and faculty to methodologies of documentation and arriving at collaborative, new ways of craft research and documentation processes and introducing them to experience Indian craft techniques and sensitisation through basic workshops (resist tie-and-dye and hand embroidery).
Project II was MOIRE: It involved developing a Digital Surface Design collection based on this archive, working with Textile Design Research Method (TDRM); collaborating with a traditional silk weaving company of Switzerland. The process involved unconventional methods of drawing and exploring including manipulation of digital camera, weaving, light, shadow, fabric scans, screen prints etc. to arrive at captivating surfaces inspired by movement and layers. Hence, enhanced digitally developed surfaces are translated into products.
