Dera: A Textile Installation at Agashiye
The brief was to use installations to modify the waiting area of Agashiye, a rooftop restaurant at the House of MG, Ahmedabad. Dera, an Urdu term from the Mughal period, denoting camps or places to rest, was the inspiration to create the installations.
The challenge was to create an experience that would be associated solely with the space while treating the subject with a fresh perspective. Physical models were made to understand the scale, structural details and visual effect of the concept within the space. Visuals were developed to be incorporated as part of the installation.
Professional tent-makers took up the final designs for fabrication. The process of printing a tent was completely different from getting yardage printed. These processes involved interacting with different craftsmen and understanding the craft of tent-making in depth. This also helped in developing the skills of managing a project at every stage.
