DAFAT: An aesthetic innovation in print design
This project is about exploring a new kind of printing technology; DAFAT (Digital Application of Colour on Textile) which takes research as the driving force for technical innovation in the field of textile print design. It involved a detailed understanding of state-of-the-art smart textiles, followed by a hands-on understanding of the machine, exploring its creative potential directed towards aesthetic innovation, and developing samples that describe its potential and show its qualities in terms of new textures, forms and effects.
It was essential to offer something which cannot be achieved through traditional existing print techniques such as inkjet printing, screen printing, block printing etc. The project is still at its inception and my part was a step towards commercialisation. Following the practical sampling and explorations, it was taken further by contacting industry people, whose opinions were documented as first-hand reactions in the Indian fashion sphere.
