Smart Braille/Audio Reader Design for the Visually Impaired
This project was about turning an innovative new technology driven idea into a tangible and usable product. The idea was to enable the visually impaired to read.
This product converts physical print into Braille and audio real time. A camera captures the text and Braille letters are displayed on a refreshable cell of six dots that are raised electronically. After discarding several concepts, a pen form was finalised. Many prototypes were developed. A final proof of concept interaction prototype and form model were created.
Prototypes were extensively tested with three users. The tests resulted in arriving at the final design. Users gave positive feedback and found it easy to navigate, read at their own pace and start and stop the text relay.
