Device for Prevention of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia
The objective was to develop a novel and effective way of reducing the risk of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) in incubated patients on mechanical ventilation in (ICUs).
As part of the research, a structured unmet needs analysis process at the emergency and trauma department of a tertiary care hospital, which involves shadowing doctors, understanding the clinical processes and disease states and the different equipment used in patient management. The design process involved research, analysis, selection of needs, brainstorming and prototyping. The methodology for data collection covered shadowing, task analysis, interviews, secondary research, questionnaires, analysis and synthesis. First, second, third and fourth level filters were employed.
In design development, brainstorming and concept development were carried out to come up with feasible concepts. For design validation, the concepts were validated by emergency physicians at various locations; including Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai.
