Wancho Laeje Birth of a new script
Aim: After a struggle of more than 11 years, Prof. Banwang Losu developed a script for his tribe. The aim of the project was to was to make the first typeface of a language belonging to a tribe which never had any script before. The typeface was made for print usages, as the script would be used in schools and introduced to its people for the first time.
Process: One was provided with the first draft of the script, which was then refined over the time. Problem areas were identified in each alphabet and then those were worked upon. The form was also reworked, extra elements were removed and the script was brought to a simpler form. Understanding the Wancho tribe and its tradition was also very important to this project, as it directly affected the formation of the letters; and the inspiration behind the characters were one of the main factors affecting the final form and look of the typeface.
Results: Wancho Laeje is a typeface with two weights which consists of 42 speech sounds and 10 numerals.
