My diploma project is an animation film titled Joy Ride. The story is about a little street boy named Joy; a junk collector who inadvertently enters one day in an old desolate Tram shed where he finds plenty of rusted and dismantled Tramcars. There he meets an aged Tram driver who takes him to an enjoyable Tram ride passing through many places which seem to be unfamiliar, different and divine.
Through my film I have tried to create awareness about the golden era of Kolkata and its Trams. Introduced in 1873, Tram is an eco-friendly vehicle which is providing service till date despite the negligence and ignorance shown by the people of Kolkata.
I did my initial research on the topic through internet and then visited five Tram depots in Kolkata where I took photographs of the new, old and dismantled Tramcars. I also interviewed the Tram drivers, conductors and commuters.
After completing the storyboard, I started working on the animatic using Adobe Premiere. My film uses two treatments: the beginning and end is in traditional (cell) animation while the middle part uses the oil-on-glass technique. I collected sounds from various sources such as NID library, the internet and also on my digital camera while travelling on Tram. Compositing was done on Premiere and the sound track was created using Cool Edit Pro. The music for my film was composed by a professional musician.
Through this project, I learnt a lot about the overall process of making animation film. It has enhanced my consciousness about the finer details like design, pacing and style and has also given me more confidence to begin my career as an animation film maker. |
