My diploma project tried to raise awareness about the sacrifices parents make for the sake of their children. It was based in the suburban setting of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh and was actually inspired by an incident in my own life in the early 90’s, when TV was relatively new and rare amongst economically poor classes. This animation film dealt with the a story of a 12 year old boy who unaware of his parents’ poor financial condition kept insisting to buy him a television set. This compelled his father to fulfil his demand by sacrificing his own comforts.
I started with sketching from my memory on paper. Apart from the local slum, I also visited few villages near Ahmedabad like ‘Badarkhan’ and ‘Rampur’. I wrote a screenplay and made two drafts of a storyboard based on it. After that I made the animatic based on the storyboard and also did the initial sound design. I designed the characters and chose a sepia tone look and feel for my film. The backgrounds are hand drawn on paper and coloured on Photoshop. The animation was done directly in Flash and composited with the backgrounds in Adobe After Effects. I approached a professional music director to create a theme music which has that childlike innocence mixed with nostalgia using traditional Indian instruments like harmonium and tabla.
Through this project I have learnt that animation film making requires a lot of patience and it is really important to keep the spirit alive and be motivated. It has given me better understanding and knowledge of film making besides boosting my courage and confidence levels. |
