My diploma film is an adaptation of 'The dove’s egg', which is a folktale from the book titled 'Folktales of India' by A.K. Ramanujan. The story is about a bird whose egg is stolen and she goes to different animals in the jungle asking for help. After refusal from all the animals the disappointed bird finally gets help from an ant and eventually gets her egg back. I thought it would be interesting to animate a narrative as simple and clear as this one which deals with the story of so many animals.
The storyboard for this film was made in the form of a long strip where the characters were placed against a background. The sound track consisted of rhyming dialogues synched to a table beat. I delivered the dialogues for all the characters myself by manipulating my voice using the sound software.
For the treatment of my film I decided to use a style that resembles a generic Indian folk art. A lot of patterns were influenced by henna designs. The characters were a hybrid of cut-outs and 3 D models made of plaster of Paris and wire. I created an animation setup at home using a digital camera and a CFL bulb mounted on a stool. The frames were cleaned up using Photoshop. The backgrounds, characters and other elements were composited using 3 D layers in After Effects.
While working with the animation discipline I really enjoyed the freedom of work and interest-based learning. Along with my course work, the simultaneous utilisation of time in making short films always gave me a push to work further. |
