My diploma film tries to portray the celebration of death. It is essentially a story of the relationship between three children: Doe and Ray, who are siblings and their friend Mi. Doe discovers a secret place one day and shares it with Ray. Mi wanders around the city. One day Doe and Mi discover each other's secrets. Through my animation film I have tried to eliminate all the negative notions and fears associated with death and tried to portray death not as an end but as a new beginning to a better life.
After initial deliberations, I decided to make my film using the two dimensional or hand-drawn animation techniques. This was to explore the medium of drawing in which the form and the content of my story blended beautifully. The first stage was some rough animations which were done using the straight-ahead animation method. I prefer exaggeration in animation rather than completely life-like movements. Therefore, the backgrounds are multi-coloured to emphasize the element of fantasy. The characters speak in Bengali. All dialogues were pre-recorded and the lip-synchronisation work has been done based on it. Different media like water colour, drawing ink and Photoshop have been combined to create a complete picture which lives up to my artistic and emotional expectations.
Working on this film has been my greatest learning experience. Besides improving my story-telling and drawing skills, I have also learnt multiple software like Adobe After Effects, Flash and InDesign. Before working on this project, I used to be reluctant to the idea of going a step back and rectifying the mistakes, now I find it to be a part of the process and a way forward. |
