The story of my animation film was about a small boy fascinated with fire and water
and how they worked against the other. Because of his keen interest in fire he got into
trouble by lighting a haystack on fire. Wai is an animation film based on my experiences
as a child in Haflong. It was primarily concerned with the fascination that children have
with fire and water and the small fantasies they build up around their daily activities.
I didn’t do much research on the film, because it was based mostly on my childhood
experiences. For the backgrounds of my film, I had to go back and take a few snapshots
of my house and its surroundings. For the sound bit, I researched online for as many
barbershop or acapella tracks as possible. After completing the storyboard I went and
made an animatic of the film with rough sound. The character designs were based on
my childhood photographs. I decided to keep the entire film in black and white, except
for the part with the fire and Water Boy which is coloured with pencil colours, to get the
effect of a child’s illustration. The rest of the film was done in traditional style with pen
and ink. The main character animation was done in the classical 2D animation style.
Working on this film gave me a lot of new ideas and also a lot of experience in working
with new tools, compositing and editing. It also made me work on the medium of sound
and sparked my interest in doing more of such work in the near future. |
