The lone character in my diploma film is an old woman, who lives with her family in
an apartment, in an urban locality. One evening while she is knitting, she opens her
window to feed the birds and sees a kite falling from the sky. The spectacle leads her to
a fleeting moment of memories and grave thoughts. Through this project, I wanted to
make a narrative that progressed in a slightly realistic manner in terms of the sequence
of events and also in terms of cause and effect of the actions. My story had two different
mind spaces, one of the old lady's sub-conscious mind and memories, and the other,
the reality she was living in, the present. I decided to give the sequences taking place in
reality a mild wash of colour with some light and shade. For the imaginary sequences,
the coloured frames were vectorized on Illustrator. I made a rough layout of the room
using Maya. The final artwork was done using Corel Painter. The character was animated
on the light box. The compositing, lighting and colour correction was done in Adobe After
Effects. I used the rough sound track to time the line test. The final edit was done on
Adobe Premiere. Making this film took from me all that I had learnt and challenged all
that I was unsure of. Now I feel more confident about this medium. I am left with a lot
of solutions and new set of questions that are more evolved than the ones I started with. |
