My diploma project was to create a music video for the artist, Udyan Manu Sagar, who works under the name of Nucleya for his track ‘Chandan Sa Badan’, which is a remix of the popular Hindi by the same name.
A symbol comes to life and escapes from the factory where it is made. With no idea about life in the outside world it reaches the city and starts searching for his dream girl but experiences disappointment wherever it goes. It comes across different women but gets turned down by each one of them, crushing its expectations and his heart every time. As it begins to think that life is cruel and offers nothing more, it finds its ‘Chandan Sa Badan’.
As the sound track was readymade, I did not have to design sound for the video. After listening repeatedly to the track, I came up with several concepts. I perceived the male singer as the seeker of mysterious beauty. I did a textual breakdown of the music and created a storyboard based on it. The final treatment chosen was a mix of rough pencil sketches, drawn, inked and coloured on paper and treated in Adobe Photoshop. The characters were kept very simple, so I could animate them easily and rapidly. The compositing was done using Adobe After Effects and the editing in Adobe Premiere.
This project has been a great learning experience especially because it did not go as planned. I learnt a lot about the client–designer relationship and the things to keep in mind before undertaking a project. |
