My diploma film began with a wedding sequence in which a grandmother narrated
a story to her grandson. A Nepalese king wanted to marry an Uttaranchaly king’s
daughter. When the king refused, the Nepalese king threatened to attack him and
forcefully marry his daughter. Eventually, the Uttaranchaly king agreed to the match,
but they had a mock fight before the wedding which converted into a dance form after
many years. Through my film I have tried to create awareness about this rare folk
dance of Uttaranchal called Cholia. I went through a lot of treatments and finally took
inspiration from my mother's drawings in our in-house temple using rice paste on a
red colour background. My characters were inspired by real soldiers and kings from
history. For my animation, I converted them into a simple and less detailed design which
looked like a part of Aipan art. My film was divided into three kinds of treatment: first
is 2D animation, used for the beginning. The second part was the main history of Cholia
where 2D animation morphs into Aipan art on a plain background with an additional
mud texture. The third part of the film consists of video. This project enhanced my
skills, ability to think and the art of animation film making. Because my animation is
done using software I also learnt certain software skills. I feel happy that I worked on a
meaningful film with a social message based on a heart-felt concern. |
