This is a joint diploma project which two of us Gayatri Mehra and Amaranta Nehru did
together. Our animation film highlights the problem of acute water scarcity. In this film,
a destitute farmer leaves his drought struck village and seeks better fortune in a big city
till a simple idea strikes him. He returns to his village and tells the villagers that the little
rainfall they receive in their village can be sufficient for them if it is collected. We wanted
to communicate the concept of ‘Rainwater harvesting’ in rather less scientifically loaded
terms and make it more comprehensible to the general audience. Our objective was to
make the animation communicable even to the audience at the grassroot level without
compromising on the aesthetic aspect of the film. It was important for us to make the
film visually interesting without being simplistic. The process started with an attempt
to understand water problem in general. For this we visited the Ahmedabad Municipal
Corporation’s Water Department, interviewed people, travelled to areas of the city where
such problems exist and also spoke to some experts. We identified two key issues to
deal with the problem:
1. To explain the reasons for water scarcity and ways to overcome it
2. To make the concept of ‘rainwater harvesting’ more accessible in a visually interesting
manner
By the end of our research, we had realized that the rate of the depletion of groundwater
reserves is too high. As communicators we felt that among all possible solutions
rainwater harvesting was a practical solution and the idea needed to be communicated
to the common people. Working together was a mutually learning experience where both
of us benefited from knowing each others’ perspectives to deal with the problem. |
