My diploma film dealt with the story of Bansi and Chotu the eight and three year old sons of the daily wage labourers Parwati and Manveer. Two years ago, they moved from Bihar to Varanasi in search of better earnings. Manveer left his family and went to Delhi to earn money. He never returned. As hunger crept in, the two kids were forced to step out and search for their daily bread themselves. This struggle led them to confront the harder realities of life.
I wanted to use the experiences of my life and observation of poverty at Varanasi, my hometown, to tell a story through an animation film. I collected a large amount of data through my research, pictures and sketches showing detailed architecture and daily life. I also had video clippings showing the busy and congested street life in and around the vicinity of the temple. I decided to portray the feel and not the literal look of Varanasi. The colours were given priority over the detailing of the space. Even on a two-dimensional plane, the simple textures were successful in portraying the intrinsic appeal of the huge structures. Adding sound was like adding life to the visuals. Together it easily created the intended time and space in the film. The art of storytelling through the medium of animation is far more complex than it appears. Since this was my first animation film, it had been somewhat difficult for me. Each day brought something new for me to explore. I discovered that this medium offered a lot of flexibility to effectively translate any narrative. |
