My diploma film dealt with the story of two sentient creatures flying over a landscape.
They co-existed symbiotically with some humans travelling with them. The relationship
of the creatures their trial through their existence, the pain that the relationship goes
through, is felt by the people travelling with them. This idea forms the basis of the story.
The core idea of the film is developed around a sketch. The rough doodle sparked off
themes and ideas almost immediately after it had been sketched. My first steps were
to establish a core theme/concept for the film and then to generate imagery and sound
around it. I directly started animating the concept, imagery and the sound that I had
created, creating the mood as I went ahead with the film. The process was exciting to
say the least. At the very best, I think my process is documentation into the secret life
of these creatures. All animation is being done in 2D directly on the computer with the
use of Adobe Flash and tablet. This decision has been taken to avoid time-consuming
sub-processes and to allow the animation to be more spontaneous and flexible. All the
films I have worked on during my period of study here at the Institute, have taught me
immensely about the understanding of animation as a technique, art form and medium
of expression. |
