FURNITURE DEVELOPMENT IN COCONUT WOOD

This documentation is a study on the sustainable use of coconut wood in the design and furniture industry. It aims at value addition to the material and development of a design language of its own; also to understand the reasons behind ignorance about the material.

The first step was talking with an expert in the field of coconut wood working. Other methods included literature study and data collection from major wood research institutes. Major study was done on the material and the expected context of its reintroduction - the tourism sector. The design was developed through a series of explorations, concept development and concept detailing, based on research analysis.

The design was validated at different stages by scale down model study, prototype study and testing in the context. Considering the two prototypes and comparing the dimensional variations in the context and user based analysis, design details were fixed.
