Library Space planning & Furniture for IIM Udaipur
The project was to design library spaces for IIM Udaipur. After understanding the architectural requirement of the consultants, a furniture layout was proposed, meeting all basic requirements; including literature review, understanding of various library functions, user requirements through interviews and discussions with librarians, staff and students. This research further helped understand the actual needs of a library – to store books, as well as provide better learning
The second phase involved developing furniture for reader areas, further divided into spaces to think and meet. In the former, students require focus, solitude, temporary ownership of space and visual & acoustical privacy. Before starting with design conceptualisation, thorough research was done on ergonomic and dimensional requirements of furniture, material innovations and their availability, and available products in the international market. The study also involved understanding regional identity through local crafts, architecture etc. From the study, a design palette was developed.
