Collapsible Paper Furniture & Lamps
The project was to make a collection of table and pendant paper lamps, for the European market. The basic outline of the design process included research, material exploration, ideation and conceptualisation, mock-up models and their refining processes, prototyping and final documentation. The primary methodology for exploration of forms leading to the final pieces was origami.
Exploratory forms were inspired by simple, elegant details of nature. Bases used were tri-lamp, turn-lamp and paper. Suspension (pendant lamps) was also used. Designs were developed through initiatory sketches of applicable forms and their refinement; focusing on few forms. Products being made from paper, involved choice of pleating and folding; followed by mock up models – thereby experimenting with types of paper, exposure to treatments and stresses, while creating different depths of light and its manipulation.
A similar process was involved for developing furniture, where supported load, stress, collapsibility were tested. All designs were collapsible.
