My diploma project was to design three collections of kitchen and table linen for 2011. Palette Designs Inc., my sponsor chiefly caters to the middle class markets of Europe and USA. Its product range comprises kitchen accessories, table linen, and coordinated sets of cushions. After conducting an in depth market survey, a brief study of their buyers, and acquainting myself with international trends, I identified key themes and began creating new design surfaces for products. The themes for inspiration were—`Sundried’, `Pods’ and ‘Iznik fabric’. It was interpreted through a creative use and good blend of techniques such as printing, weaving, and machine embroidery. I visited Karur for the sampling of woven designs. I also designed a range of coordinated kitchen towels. A lot of time was spent on exploration of forms and compositions. Each product had to look individually appealing and cohesive when kept together. In one of the collections, I introduced a new concept for a reversible mix-n-match runner and this was appreciated by many. I learnt how important communication and coordination was. When work was distributed amongst different people who specialise in their areas then there are chances of miscommunication. So specifications had to be clear and in a language understood by all. In a sense, all these stages of creation coordinate like different parts of the same body. |
