The brief for my diploma project was to develop a design collection for the upcoming Spring-Summer Home Furnishing Collection 2011 for "Spaces - Home & Beyond" - a brand of Welspun Home Textiles division. The project was to design a dual collection of both prints and new techniques in fabric constructed surfaces for the bedroom furnishing range. The fabric construction work for the project focused solely on reusing the company's waste fabric material generated during the manufacturing of other collections. The project involved extensive research not only in terms of market surveys, customer surveys and analysis of current trends and future forecasts, but also in terms of new techniques.
My approach for the project was research-driven exploring possibilities to adapt design thinking to maximize the use of waste and generate innovative concepts in terms of application and techniques. Working on the Spring-Summer collection provided me the colour palette with fresh and cheerful hues and shades, though it was quite a task to generate all of this exclusively from waste fabric and devise a sustainable model that can be applied across categories. The final outcome was four collections for print and another four collections for fabric constructed surfaces. Through my project I realized the importance of the design process and learnt how companies strive to achieve processes directed towards sustainable co-existence. |
