My diploma project brief was to develop soft furnishings for high end use holiday cottages as a part of project Teesta in Sikkim. I combined traditional art forms, and styles and sensibilities with contemporary ideas that were functionally universal yet rooted in tradition. I used hand crafting and machine work wherever required. The arts and crafts of Sikkim, the traditional textiles of Lepchas and Bhutias, and the architecture of Sikkim served as inspirations. The sponsor preferred the weaving technique and contemporising art and craft with minimal change. I worked with architects, understood the dynamics of interior spaces, and realised the active role textiles play as space modifiers. I understood the nature of spaces and their unique needs. I arrived at unique themes and colour stories that offered exclusive solutions till the sampling stage for spaces such as the dining room, living room, guest bedroom (on both floors), family room, and master bedroom. The budget, time constraints and sampling limitations allowed me to create working prototypes for one collection comprising bed runners, cushions and window blinds. My diploma project was a combination of design and practicality; aesthetics and feasibility; and art and architecture. Working and interacting with people from different areas opened up a new world of practical design where durability, viability and beauty—all collectively formed a successful design. |
