My diploma project brief was to work on the Autumn Winter collection of bed linen for 2010. I worked on four theme based collections and created a coordinated collection of cushion covers—all using high quality printing technology, and roller and digital printing. I carried out a thorough trend research and created mood boards and colour stories. Most of the design was done on the computer and was often simulated on bed drapes for better visualisation. Getting the right colours and forecast based colour combinations were a constant challenge. The product range comprised sheets, pillows, and duvet covers. It was challenging to visualise and work for so many products. The first collection was for the classic range and had a botanical and ornamental look, the second one was inspired by the Baroque theme, the third one had the stencil cut look with foliage as inspiration for forms, and the final one allowed me to play around with floral forms. I realised the significance of colours in the world of print design. The approach to forms was in keeping with Portico’s style of large scale, graphical, and semi abstract forms. Each collection comprised 10–12 designs. These collections were to cater to the upper end markets of India. The constraints encouraged me to form the basis of my design. It was indeed a learning experience where I learnt to work within a team, coordinate with the designers, and deal with the clients. |
