My diploma project was developing a designer collection of fashion stationery for the upcoming Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany. The project was a unique blend of textile design and visual communication. The research on the project involved study and analysis of the market trends in terms of export feasibility as well as competition. The stationery sector being new to me, it demanded a deeper understanding. My first project involved developing a range of patterned diaries inspired from Naga shawls. The directions from the research led to the collection of fabrics for book covers which had a modern, clean and simple graphical approach. The other collection was inspired from `Bollywood’ and was a venture into the world of graphics and pop art. The challenge of designing simpler things is actually much bigger than the challenge of designing complex things. The textile part of the project was to develop a new range of product called a book bag which was refined and made technically sound. The product was meant for a higher end market and was supposed to have utility combined with fashion. The thin line between visual communication and a textile sensibility was something that intrigued me throughout the project. Design cannot survive without involving with the issues related to the real world. Hence, balancing design with practical constraints was a key factor of my diploma project. While working on this project I learnt how important marketing and presentation become in a commercial setup. |
