My diploma project was to work towards empowering the weavers in the field of fabric development through a process of producing a new range of fabric from different types of yarns. Chitrika, an artisan development foundation works with two handloom weaving villages near Ponduru in the Srikakulam district. I developed a systematic design process which enabled me to contribute beyond the development of fabrics. Initiatives were taken to connect the cooperatives to local resources to create a well knit system of smooth yarn supply, market insights, design aesthetics and the sales. During the course of the project, I participated and presented my ideas in a symposium for handloom cooperatives. I shared my acquired knowledge with the weavers of the two handloom cooperative societies through an interactive workshop in Ponduru. With active participation of the weavers and cooperative employees, I developed base fabrics for shirts, pants, dress materials in Linen, Khadi and the existing mill spun cotton yarn. Samples using natural dyes with Malkha were developed as a thicker fabric for apparel. In an effort to revive the traditional skill of the Srikakulam weavers and create an identity, the kuppadam technique was reintroduced to develop dupatta samples.
Working with a management oriented NGO and the weavers of the handloom cooperatives was a great learning for me. It helped me understand the functioning of the handloom sector and NGO and also in identifying my own strengths and weaknesses. |
