My diploma project involved creating fabrics that Rajesh Pratap Singh could use to craft apparels for his forthcoming collections. I had to develop surfaces with print for the Spring Summer 2010 collection that was showcased at the Wills India Fashion Week 2009. The focus was on using prints effectively and innovatively; thereby, giving the techniques a contemporary look that Singh is known for. A few of these ideas were interpreted and used by him in his collections.
Self-defined mood-boards with themes that were inspired from simple concepts such as a Bihari construction worker, marked the design approach. In the Gamcha (hand woven checkered cotton towel) theme, I chose to work innovatively with checks. For the Wills India Fashion week, the theme was ‘Broken glass’ and I tried exploring the scope of a single screen using various innovative printing techniques. I also worked on a collection for the first men’s fashion week organised by FDCI in New Delhi in September. I also got to work on developing Rogan printing for a modern context.
All the collections would be in the market next season through the Rajesh Pratap Singh stores as well as other multibrand stores. A vague, brief, and chaotic work pattern lead to an open-ended study and development of a wide range of explorations.
