My diploma project brief was to come up with new designs for made ups for the sponsor by building up a new vocabulary using existing fabrics along with various techniques of surface ornamentation and decoration. The sponsor works with various techniques of surface embellishment to create home furnishing products such as bed linen, table linen, assorted cushions, and quilts. For the first collection, I had to make stand alone cushion sets, quilts, duvet sets, bedspreads, curtains, and table linen for Heimtextil – 2009/10 and New York Home Fashions Market Week March 2010. After a study of the company and infrastructure, the user profile, and international market trends, I arrived at three themes. The first two collections involved hands on work with techniques such as quilting, piping, tucking, pleating, and embroidery. Fabrics such a silk, poly taffeta, and satin were used. Explorations on small swatches were followed by sampling and colour fine tuning for the final production. This received very a very encouraging response at the Heimtextil Fair in Germany. The last collection was based on weaving. I got to learn the value of details and the fact that they should not be obvious, but they should be correct to the requirement of the product and styling. Through my diploma project, I realised that practicality in production and cost effectiveness are of prime importance. |
