My diploma project was to design and develop a home linen product range which was to be exhibited in EVTEKS 2010, textile trend fair held in Istanbul, Turkey. I also had to design and develop a range of woven upholstery fabric and for this I had to develop and explore surfaces and embroideries for Yamini, a domestic brand. I worked as a part of the company’s design team. Mood boards and theme boards were an outcome of a detailed study of the international trends. The first collection—Gulshan was based on computer embroidery and engineered printing. Nature served as an inspiration for 30 designs for cushion covers and 15 for table runners. I also prepared the company invitation for the fair. Out of the second collection of blue green woven series, 6 were finalised and woven at Kannur in Kerala. The third collection comprised embroidered fabrics. The design process at Synergy is very subjective and depended on the designer; hence, it gave me a clear understanding of the design process on which the export sector functions. Through this diploma project, I realised that one must have a clear idea about presentation of designs, execution of designs and their costs. I also learnt how markets would respond to experimental designs, and how many such designs could be done for one market, and how much it could support. |
