My diploma project brief focused on using various fabric manipulation techniques to design four major home furnishing collections comprising quilt sets that included two shams, a set of different-sized pillows, bed runners, table runners, and table mats. The sponsor is an export as well as retail house based in Gurgaon .The company develops designs for home furnishings for an up market clientele in India as well as famous brands and retailers around the world. I did a survey on the client profile and current trends in the world of home textiles and fashion across the world. After trend forecasting, I prepared my theme board, chose appropriate key words to define the theme or inspiration chosen. Thereafter, sketches and explorations were sampled in the form of swatches. The first collection was for the Tendence Fair. The next collection titled `Less is More’ was inspired by traditional Indian hand embroidered products and patchwork techniques. The second collection `Back to Nature’ allowed me to explore the textured look through quilting, printing, and a combination of both. The next collection on `Stripes’ was executed with machine embroidery. For the final collections—‘Retrometry’ and `Floral’, I used a combination of all the techniques. The final quantity that one is aiming at manufacturing also affects the design process drastically. Finally, I learnt that it is important to think both at the macro and the micro level. |
