My diploma film is about a day in the life of 'Tipu' and his divorcee mother. Tipu is a college going student and is introvert by nature. The mother and son face an strange situation on a particular day. Tipu has to go for a party on Valentine's Day which is also the birthday of his close friend 'Jaya'. The mother is rather anxious about her son's visit to the party. She gives him some money to buy a gift and wishes that this time he gives the gift to the person he is destined to meet.
For my diploma fiction film, I wanted to adapt an existing story. During the course of pre-production, due to various reasons both directorial and technical, I ended up writing the story myself. My film is inspired by the short story 'Idgaah' by Munshi Premchand. I wanted my film to be very subtle so that it could gently touch the audience's sensibility and move on. After finalizing my script, I storyboarded my film to make sure that I don't miss any shot. I shot my film at my hometown, Indore. The shoot spanned a total of four days. I edited the film on my notebook computer. This film did not require any special effects; just editing and some colour correction. I found sound designing the most challenging aspect in the process of making this film.
My learning at NID has been quite wholesome. I learnt a lot about films, people and life; a new perspective towards everything. Technical knowledge took a back seat and content became important. I used to wonder why film makers say they took years writing a certain script. But now I know that to recreate life on screen, you first need to live it yourself. |
