My diploma film is a documentary based in the Shekhawati region of Marwar in Rajasthan. The film is based on the idea of migration and the shift in cultural identity in the context of the change the region and its people have faced over the years. My film intended to explore how the points of view of those who have migrated are still strongly rooted in the cultural and ethical values they carried with them initially. The treatment for my film is in a story/narrative format using the mundane stories of the village juxtaposed with the interviews of the migrated Marwaris residing in the city of Mumbai. I decided to shoot during the month of April. A week before the shoot, my crew and I sat down and did a rough shot breakdown of all the places I wanted to cover and what aspects of each person and story was I looking for. I edited my film using Final Cut Pro. I tried using subtle hints by layering the various stories interwoven between clips and multiple points of view. My music track used three basic instruments – the classical guitar, the jembe and small ghungroos.
I learnt from the project that for the people who had stayed back, the process of change was rather slow but more concrete. They were also more ambitious since they wanted to survive. They had to form their own identities outside the identities given to them by the “seths”. Thus, came the acceptance of modernization and a modest and slow need to change. |
