My diploma film dealt with the story of a lower middle class family. Saroj argues with her son Manna about the beauty in alphabets and Manna is stuck up comprehending the concept. Manna craves to find the pearl for her mother but does not know what a ‘Pearl’ is. The fisher boy is lost in fables about his Mamu's heroic acts and the lake. Clad in white kurta-pyjama, Mamu with one of his disciples talks about the wonderful lake of Bhopal. This film used two metaphors, the sea and the pearl. My film talked about life and living life with its happiness and sadness, together. The characters in my film have been derived from different poems by my grandfather and my mother. I wrote the script in Hindi which I storyboarded later. This film was my chance to get in touch with my hometown, Bhopal. Casting, location recce, finding the crew, equipment and shooting permissions were carried out simultaneously. I edited the film on my laptop. The dialogues were dubbed. The music for my film was composed, and a Bundelkhandi folk song was used as a nostalgic element in it.
I realized that the hardest part for me in the craft of film-making is making actors act and above all telling a story, in the strict sense. I always wanted to make films on my grandfather’s poetry and this film was my first attempt towards that. |
