My diploma film starts with a glimpse of Punjab, moving on to a tannery where the raw
hide is prepared which by the end of the documentary is turned into the most sought
after footwear one can imagine. The film attempted to show the process of crafting
traditional juttis in a non-linear way, emphasising more on the regional variation of
the same. The film tells the tale of the mochi and chamar (cobblers and tanners)
communities of Punjab. They have been making traditional Punjabi juttis for many
centuries. The film opens with a narration about Punjab and its rich socio-cultural
background. The film has interviews and also graphics and maps. On screen time of
workshops and technique is held for a sufficient time for the audience to follow the
details involved in handcrafting each pair of jutti. No storyboard was prepared in the
pre-production stage. The basic look and feel of the film was captured using digital still
camera during the initial recce. These images served as ready reference shared with
other crew members before and during the shoot. It was only after the first phase of
shoot that I realized that I had to stick to a crisp and unique theme for my film. Through
this project, I learnt many historical and cultural facts about Punjab. |
