My diploma film was an adaptation of a short story called ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ by W W Jacobs. The concept was based on a mummified monkey’s paw which grants wishes. The story has an eloped couple trapped in a shed in the middle of a deserted place and they start playing with ‘the monkey’s paw’. After having dabbled with quite a few ideas for my diploma, I finally decided to revisit my school days and tackle a story that had left a deep impression on me.
I scripted the story in an Indian setting and set it in a specific time period (the 1970s). I made a floor plan to understand the shooting axis and the camera angles. I decided to shoot in the store room located at the back fields of NID. The film was shot over a period of 3 nights. The restricted space demanded the use of a smaller camera, which is why I shot the entire film with a DSLR. The main source of light in the space is a lantern. As the things start getting disturbing, the camera gets a bit jerky and the lighting also gets dimmer and darker. I learnt that most of the films are made or changed on location and that depends on the way the team manages to face the situations and overcomes them. |
