My diploma film dealt with the story a girl in her mid twenties who has lost her father of late. Her mother, who is in early forties, worries about her and wants her to get married. Since the mother is alone, her daughter wants to support her financially and is not interested in getting married. While searching for a job she faces a series of ‘gazes’. When doing my diploma project and commuting by bus, I noticed a particular gaze of male for women co-passengers, sometimes silent and sometimes loud. This made me think further and I decided to take my observation ahead in the form of a short fiction film. I went through a few versions of my story before arriving at a final script. I wanted to present the film as a very normal day to day incident with no other added element of fiction so that the characters appear credible. I storyboarded my script and also did a shot-breakdown. I cut down the production cost by using non-professional crew and casts. The film was shot on HDV format over a period of 4 days. I edited my film on Adobe Premiere Pro and added a lot of foley sounds in post. It took almost a year to complete this film. After coming to NID, my whole perspective of viewing films changed. I learnt to recognize and appreciate the different layers in the film which work simultaneously. |
