Hotu Home is a design studio started by designer Divyam Mehta in 2006. The company produces beautifully crafted garments for both men and women under its label “DIVYAM MEHTA”. Most of the garments are inspired from the vast cultural heritage of the country, fused together with impeccable construction and finishing. The objective of the project was to create a separate line of garments for young men with a more affordable range of products consisting of day wear. The products had to be young in character, have the latest in cuts, and designed with high quality finishing. The project involved study of the market, and understanding trends of the season for spring summer 2010. Explorations were done in draping, embroidery and surface ornamentations. Different dhoti draping styles were studied to come up with new contemporary versions of it. Artwork was done for new prints and fabric weaves. After a series of explorations, the samples were developed. I learnt how simple construction details can make menswear so interesting and unique. With the essence of menswear lying mostly in its finishing, construction and fabrics, it was a challenge to actually create and innovate within the boundaries of subtleness. Undertaking this new venture of the company as my final diploma project was indeed an educative experience for me. |
