My diploma project was sponsored by Dastkar Andhra, an NGO working for the welfare
of weavers. Dastkar Andhra has a retail outlet in Hyderabad called ‘Dāram’. I had to
develop a range of infant wear using organic natural dyed handloom cotton for spring
summer 2011, and launch a new concept—Pure Innocence. Initially, I familiairsed
myself with the organisation, the people, language, infrastructure, work system,
fellow designers, existing design language, products, and customers. I had to study
the process—right from manufacturing the yarn to making the garment. For this, I
researched customer requirements, demographics and psychographics of the mothers
and attempted to understand the infants. I was a part of the quality checking team
so I had to understand the standards of measurement and production requirements. I
took field trips to the interiors of Andhra Pradesh to see how weaving, natural dyeing,
Kalamkari block printings were done. Then came the designing stage and I had to keep
in mind everything from the market survey to my inspiration and mood board. I picked
five different elements from 1950s for my collections and gave them all a similar yet
unique character set. My diploma project gave me insights into the complete life cycle
of designing a collection in the niche area of handloom based kids wear; along with
exposure to the administration and marketing aspects of the clothing industry. |
