I did my diploma project with The Shop, an almost forty year old family run business that focuses on designing hand crafted textiles and apparel. It specialises in prints, hand block printing, and screen working on traditional techniques, and contemporary designs. The company is committed towards developing ecologically sustainable production techniques. I worked on the nightwear range for its spring summer and autumn winter catalogues, and on a recycled waste product line. Nightwear was made in white and natural coloured clothes in pure cotton. Explorations on trims and silhouettes were done. These were primarily for women in the age group of 30–50. The brief for recycled or ‘green’ products was open ended. I was free to decide how a particular waste product could be designed into a usable one. A line of cushions was from waste fabrics, and a table and bed linen collection in patchwork from the excess stock of printed fabrics were made. The waste material had to be used in a way that these products could be created repeatedly without changing the look of the product. So, emphasis was put on the surface and the look and feel of the product more than the colour and print. The versatility of the projects that I worked showed me how small establishments worked and the workflow involved in every product that was designed and produced. |
