The objective of my diploma project titled Spring Dyed was to experiment with resist dyeing techniques to produce fabrics for ready to wear garments for the modern women.
My design process and methodology included explorations with the bandhani dot in a contemporary way so as to widen the range of fabrics for producing garments in modern styles. Further explorations were done in texture and draping to add a new dimension to the silhouette. These explorations encouraged me to attempt clamp dyeing for another collection. The critical aspect of this exploration was the restructuring of the technique of clamp dyeing process. The restructuring was in the form of change in the folding style and also in the use of different clamps to enhance the surface design of the fabric. As the layers of dye interact, the edges bleed out in a subtle haze or leave a crisp line, showing the varied characteristics of the fibre and dyes. This is how the idea of placement of clamp dyeing came up.
This project strengthened my understanding about the ability of the design process to impact our cognitive system. I learnt how the design intervention beginning from the treatment of the fabric to enhancing the design features of the garment can introduce diversity in the industry. I also learnt the role of creative decision making and accurate resource planning for optimum utilisation of time. |
