I had a phenomenal opportunity of working at GM Daewoo in Incheon, South Korea. This was my first experience as a textile designer to work on cars. I evolved to the understanding that the work of a color and trim designer is to ‘dress up a car’.
My project was a completely research based project that focused on the emerging market of Indonesia. I first conducted a benchmark study on trends and production process of current automotive fabrics and a similar research study on fabric trends for automotive use. Using the data from this research study I designed multiple fabrics for GM Daewoo (knit, woven, emboss, print) etc. and created a presentation. I also analyzed the research and determined which color trends are important for automotive trims and also developed proposals for exterior body color for the M300 called ‘COORDINATE AND MATCH’.
Environmental sustainability was at the forefront of my creative mind. I wanted to ensure that even upholstery is fused with concerns of recyclability in tandem with cars which run on alternative fuels.
GM was no exception to the global recession facing all companies in the market. During these critical times, I got to witness pure grassroots leadership from the masses where employees lifted their spirits by encouraging each other. Blending the fields of textile design and automobiles was a first for me and I enjoyed this experience thoroughly. The biggest overall learning was the exposure aimed by immersing myself in a completely foreign culture and imbibing elements of language, customs and corporate culture of Korea. |
