My interest in textiles has been shaped by my fascination with the warmth and comfort of a variety of textures, colors and patterns. My sponsor, the East India Company’s brand identity centers around high value designs, innovative concepts, and a stamp of quality assurance.
My assignment was to design three collections, three different color stories and three different looks of home furnishings in keeping with their brand values.
The first, Classic country, is mainly a cotton collection based on an Egyptian theme which are both classic and contemporary. The second collection, Illusionist, is mainly based on polyester cotton and silk. The theme is inspired by modern congested high rise buildings and slum areas. The third, a Kids collection with very bright colors, is inspired from crayon look wall drawing.
The ranges were sophisticated, innovative and unique. They were designed specifically for participation in Heimtextil (an international export fair in Germany in 2010) and can be distinguished from their regular products in the market.
The project allowed me to work with an amalgamation of techniques such as weaving, printing, embroidery and stitching all towards building a cohesive collection. It also helped me to understand the language of co-ordinates using different techniques around three themes. I acquired an understanding of the fundamentals of building collections. I learnt to work with people at all levels and to articulate my ideas to others and acquire their consensus. In addition to the professional aspects of designing, it was also an excellent opportunity to learn the art of working with people. |
