My sponsor ‘The Shop’ is an export house that deals with home furnishing products as well as lifestyle accessories having stores in India, New York, and Istanbul.
The initial brief given to me was to design four mini-projects: A patchwork collection for their safari line; A collection made of waste material; Development of an innovative range of products and accessories for the retail market and finally, a print collection for table linen.
Over time, as my exposure to the company grew, and my ideas expanded, I had freedom to develop a product range based on either a theme or an inspiration or a selected technique or a particular material. The intention was that my range should bring across the brand identity and complement the style of the existing products of ‘The Shop’. The waste in fabrics charmed me. They were beautiful pieces which seemed completely random in a wide array of color. I also had the opportunity to make absolutely new products utilizing the fusion of waste. I designed a collection of pouches and handbags as well as Kullu jackets and dish coasters.
Through this experience, I acquired a thorough understanding of the infrastructure of a company, its ideology, brand identity, its working system and client base. I also acquired a comprehensive overview of the different phases of product development from initial market research to final product viability. Developing professional relationships with individuals across the company as well as craftsmen has been immensely enriching. I now understand the role that design plays in uniting crafts and technology |
