The aim of my project was to understand consumers within the European Market and to design a range of floral and geometrical prints that they would find appealing. The project brief specified that I would have to ‘create a space’ for my designs appropriately by being able to position them within the international market. In addition each design should be different enough to be sold as individual fabrics and not just as part of a collection and should be a reflection of the company’s brand signature.
My project was conducted in two phases. The former involved developing a floral range of designs and the latter contained a mix of different kinds of design. Design requirements specified that it should be done manually and not through software or computer. I conducted studies on both design trends and material trends.
Three final design concepts emerged : ‘ Laces’ – which were put together using different treatments in various flower forms; ‘Realistic Florals’ –inspired by the study of botanical flower forms and ‘Structures and Patterns in Real Life’ which was inspired by photography of interesting observations in day to day life which formed the basis for innovative geometrical patterns.
I acquired an understanding of sampling, production constraints and cost factors which affect the process of creating a good and ambitious design. The outdoor photography developed my vision as a designer by making me sensitive to my environment and surroundings.
My project gave me the opportunity to frame the creative aspects of textile design within the larger context of international markets and international clientele. |
