For my project, I designed a series of range of furnishing fabrics from light to medium density for silk furnishings and drapery for European markets.
While catering to European markets, I had to simultaneously incorporate the distinct style of the company . After a thorough analysis of markets and international trends, it became evident to me that there was a demand for floral and geometrical patterns derived from nature. I then developed new nature-based stylized motifs infused with a modern approach. I experimented with silk and other materials that blend with it.
My project had two areas:
The first was decoration-driven with floral and geometrical surfaces that were refined for contemporary appeal. Vibrant colors were used as accent.
The second was texture-driven, again inspired by nature. I made efforts to bring in new textures by stimulating different yarns and weaves . I devised a new vocabulary of patterns and textures that could be used both independently as part of a design or on the whole fabric. Colors suggested were natural and tone-on-tone shades to highlight the texture or pattern.
It is challenging to convey exactly how a design was visualized by a designer so it was exciting to see how paper concepts were translated into final products. Final artworks were prepared using Texelle and Ned software for Jacquards.
I acquired a holistic learning experience in research, clientele, forecasts, production constraints, quality control and costing. My project was a brilliant opportunity to understand the design process in an industrial set-up. |
