My project brief focused on the development of a design collection for the upcoming Spring- Summer 2010 season. I adopted an exploratory approach in terms of concept generation, weaves, textures and motifs. The research phase of the project involved studying and analyzing the market trends in terms of the export sector. This was a new experience as I did not have any first hand experience of foreign trends and the export market. The Spring Summer 2010 season is a season of gentle contrasts with a focus on design and innovation in terms of fresh new colors and color combinations.
I adopted an exploratory approach in terms of concept generation, weaves, textures and motifs. The final outcomes resulted in five collections: Summertime (Fruity citrus prints),Nature’s Basket (inspired by a trip to Crawford market), Water Way (influenced from Blue Dessert to Sea Life), Foliage (inspired by fresh green) and Cinnabar (The red mineral). Each was conceptualized as a unique color story. To support the created range of fabrics, I also developed a few waffle kitchen towels, new textures or embroidery kitchen towels and rib placemats.
My project provided me with a larger context to frame my responsibilities as a textile designer in relation to the export market and production issues by mapping textile design to various cultural contexts.
Through this project, I had the opportunity to see how changes at the micro level can impact changes at the macro level. It also underscored the importance of constant innovation, which will be an integral part of my design approach in the future. |
